The Long Road To Get To Where We Are Now

How I Ended Up Here

I grew up loving to build and always having to know how things worked. I was always wanting to learn and try new things, I could build almost anything I put my mind and effort into. I was lucky to have amazing parents and friend that encouraged me in my endeavors. My passion for making things and learning how things worked led me to where I am today.

The path to get to Clouse Consulting was a long and winding one. I was always drawn to engineering, R&D, Prototyping, and Industrial Design but for years I struggled to break into the industry. Before I finally made it here I had had many careers and experiences. While this might have delayed my entry into a field and career that truly is my passion, I wouldn't trade my early work history for anything. I have had many careers and jobs from residential construction and restoration work, web development, server-side programming, Welding, Machining,  Fabrication, Aquaculture, and even Worm Farming. All of these experiences allowed me to build a well-rounded and immense understanding of different fields and industries. I was able to acquire a strong foundation of knowledge to build this company on.

My entry into the world of R&D and Product Development finally came in early 2016. I was hired as a Web Developer for a local R&D firm. I was finally able to witness real engineering in progress, I could watch and designs and concepts were rapidly prototyped and refined into incredible and sophisticated finished products.

Looking back, my interest in what the engineers were doing was a really big distraction for me, I quickly became bored with Web Development, and my quality of work suffered. Fortunately, my interests and enthusiasm for engineering and R&D were not unknown to management. One day, the owner of the company decided to give me an opportunity that would completely change my course in life, I don't know why he did this, because at the time I don't think I deserved it, but I'm forever grateful to him and whoever else was a part of that decision. I was asked to move to a new department and I was assigned a project that had recently been left unmanaged. I was very quickly overwhelmed and humbled, I learned fast how much I didn't know but also realized there was so much that I didn't even know that I didn't know.

The project was a lifting platform that involved four posts that housed telescoping threaded rods that when turned would extend the posts' inner telescoping parts to nearly double the length of the outer housing and could lift nearly 1000 pounds. I had to sync all the motors and maintain exact positions so they would remain level with each other and not bind up. After a couple of days and some frantic research and hoping nobody realized I was completely in over my head, I was able to write some simple code to move one of the legs. Making a single leg move honestly wasn't impressive to most of the people in the department because they had already seen the other engineer that worked on the project do it 100s of times, but for me, it renewed my confidence and I quickly started refining my code and the mechanical and electrical layout and eventually had all 4 legs moving at the same time and maintaining position with each other.

After that first project, I spent several years at that company working on numerous projects and in many different capacities. I was able to experience every level and stage of R&D, from simple concepts and ideas scribbled on the whiteboard during a meeting, to prototyping and testing, and the way to production, marketing, and sales. Throughout this I soaked in all the knowledge and experiences I could, I had awesome mentors and coworkers that would push me to always be better and helped me in constructive ways when I would struggle. It was my dream job and I knew I was lucky to be there.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to be there forever, a swift economic downturn in early 2020 lead to the difficult decision to lay off a large percentage of the company workforce. It was hard, but out of my control, I've lucky been able to maintain a great relationship with the company and people who still work there and even have access to their amazing facilities and machines when I need to use them.

Right away, I started looking for projects, I already had Clouse Consulting set up and had been doing side work through the LLC for a few years. Slowly, I started getting contracts, it took a lot of work and a lot of putting myself out there and calling around, and even knocking on some doors but it all paid off.
